Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment
What is ESA Phase 2?
ESA Phase 2 is the next step of ESA Phase 1, it includes ‘intrusive’ site investigations to assess the presence, concentration, and distribution of hazardous substances in soil, groundwater, and other environmental media. Phase 2 typically investigates for Areas of Potential Environmental Concern (APEC) identified by Phase 1 ESA to determine whether there is any Potential Contaminating Activity (PCA) such as gas stations, dry-cleaners, garages, and industry. This information is required to file a Record of Site Contamination (RSC) and perform a Risk Assessment to determine pathways to human exposure, ecological effects, and the potential of off-site migration of hazardous substances such as PCB, PHC, BTEX, PAH, Lead, and VOCs.
Phase 2 ESA steps may include the following;
- Sampling of surface and subsurface soil, surface water and groundwater, sediment, and soil vapors
- Testing for Aboveground Storage Tanks (AST) and Underground Storage Tanks (UST), Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM), and Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB), geomagnetical and geophysical surveys
- Noise Levels and Harmful Radiation testing
- Drilling and/or sampling Monitoring Wells and Ground Water Wells
The purpose of a Phase 2 ESA is to confirm the presence and extent of Substances of Concern identified in Phase 1 ESA for a subject site.
